I’m taking a different track here, away from music, but still in the arts.
Back in 1984, I dropped out of college and hitchhiked across Europe, playing guitar on the streets for food, lodging, beer, and sticks of hashish. While staying with some folks in a small town in Germany I read Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises. Like plenty of other young Americans, I was stimulated to see Spain. So I hitch-hiked my way down south and ran with the bulls in the streets of Pamplona.
So began my fascination with Hemingway. I’ve read everything about him. What a life; if you exclude the four-wives, and the destruction.
Thirty-five years later, I’m back in his neighborhood. The picture here with my wife in front of La Maison de Verlaine is where he kept a small room to write while living at 74 Rue de la Cardinal Lemoine. Here he whittled down the words to make the perfect sentence and then the perfect paragraph and thus the perfect story.
We walked to where he lived with his wife Hadley and their first son John Hadley Nicanor. But the address above the sawmill at 113 Rue de Notre Dame des Champs is no longer posted. Gone. Taken down. However, the La Closerie des Lilas café at the corner of Boulevard Montparnasse, where he sat at a back table and wrote, is still tucked behind the shrubbery.
Looking back at my attraction, I don’t like his books any more; except for the early stuff, the short stories, and The Sun Also Rises.
But I still dig the life.
Our decisions in life take us to where we are and for me, that’s living in Boulder Creek, married now 17 years and father of two beautiful kids. That’s my fate.
And that’s me sitting on the steps of Saint Etienne-du-Mont Church in Woody Allen’s movie Midnight in Paris, where Owen Wilson gets picked up by the old taxi cab and transported back in time. That’s the street - Rue de la Montagne Saint-Genevieve. Check it out.
We have a few more days in Paris and then it's back to Boulder Creek and the KBCZ studio for The Jazz Report with PK on April 13th.
Until then, I’m listening to - WWW.KBCZ.ORG - Worldwide !!!
